"I want to capture the fleeting quality of the sunflowers in the breeze." LJC
I frequently mention to others that I love plein air painting, which involves painting outside to capture the spirit of a scene. The experience can be more intimidating than one might think. Beyond packing and unpacking your gear, you must find an inspiring location and contend with insects and weather conditions. Having said all this the experience can be uplifting and rewarding. My favourite painting to date done outside is, "Sallys' Sunflowers". The painting was created with quick, bold strokes of rich oil paints. The wind was blowing, making the flowers sway joyfully in the garden. This artwork brings me happiness, which is why I enjoy painting outdoors.
Here’s an acronym for aspects of plein air painting: Remember PAINT it can be fun and rewarding enjoying the view out there.
P.A.I.N.T.
Perception - Observing the environment and capturing the essence of the scene.
Adaptability - Adjusting techniques and approaches based on changing light and weather conditions.
Immediacy - Emphasizing the importance of painting on location to capture fleeting moments.
Nature - Focusing on the natural world as the primary subject matter.
Texture - Utilizing various techniques to convey the tactile qualities of the landscape.
This dynamic approach allows plein air painters to create vibrant, lively works that reflect the beauty and transience of nature.
